Rubberwood is a plantation hardwood which was originally native to Brazil but is now widely grown in plantations and found in tropical regions of Asia. Also called Malaysian Oak, it is often used as a cheaper alternative to other expensive hardwoods such as oak and teak for making furniture and other wood items. It’s light to medium brown and has poor resistance to decay and insect attacks. Most common uses include furniture, kitchen products, cabinetry, and millwork.

About Rubberwood

Rubberwood is a hardwood species in the Hevea genus. Native to Brazil, the Rubberwood trees are about 75-100 ft (23-30 m) tall and have a 1-3 ft (.3-1 m) trunk diameter. The wood is mainly popular in the Asian markets as a cost-effective hardwood for making furniture and similar items. It’s a moderately hard and heavy wood with an average dried weight of 595 kg/m3 and a 960 lbf Janka rating.

The color of Rubberwood ranges from light cream to medium brown and becomes darker with age. It sometimes has dark brown streaks. The surface is often stained or painted when used for making furniture and cabinets. The grain is straight and the texture is coarse. It’s not a durable wood and is prone to decay and insects. It is easy to work with though and once seasoned, it becomes quite stable. It is rarely available in raw lumber form. Common uses include furniture, cabinetry, small items, kitchen products like cutting boards, and interior millwork.
