About Bocote Wood
An American hardwood, Bocote is primarily found in Mexico and Central and South America. The trees are 65-100 ft (20-30 m) tall and have a 3-5 ft (1-1.5 m) trunk diameter. The wood is moderately heavy with a 855 kg/m3 average dried weight. The hardness score is above par at 2,010 lbf.
The most impressive thing about Bocote wood is its unique and attractive appearance featuring black stripes on a yellowish-brown heartwood. Figures like eyes and rays are common on the sawn surface. The figured grain is usually interlocked and the texture is medium uniform.
Bocote wood is moderately or very durable but can be prone to insect attack. It is generally easy to work with, but high oil content can sometimes cause problems. Glueing, turning and finishing is easy. Can be expensive as an exotic hardwood. It’s commonly used in applications with a focus on appearance such as fine furniture, veneers, cabinetry, flooring, boatbuilding, gunstocks, musical instruments, and turned objects.
