Though Cherry has many species, the most popular and common source of commercial lumber is the American Black Cherry tree, which has a reddish-brown heartwood and a smooth grain. It has medium hardness and density and good workability and stability. It responds well to steam bending and is used in many applications ranging from furniture and flooring to interior joinery.

About Cherry Wood

Black or American Cherry is a hardwood (deciduous) tree of the genus Prunus in the rose family. It’s native to Eastern North America. The trees or shrubs are rather small with an average height of 50-100 ft (15-30 m) and a 3-5 ft (.3-.6 m) trunk diameter. The lumber is moderately heavy and hard with a 560 kg/m3 avg. dried weight and a 950 lbf Janka rating.

The black cherry heartwood color ranges from light pinkish brown to reddish brown depending on the age. It has a straight grain and a fine and even texture with good natural lustre. Figured pieces often exhibit curly grain patterns. It is an extremely durable lumber in terms of resistance to decay but might be susceptible to some insects. It is stable and moderately hard, which makes it very easy to work with. Price can be moderate to high depending on availability. Common uses include cabinetry, flooring, veneer, furniture, millwork, and turned objects.
