Description
About Cumaru Wood
It is a South American native wood found mostly in Brazil. It comes in golden tan and red-brown colours and may sometimes have a reddish hue on the body and yellowish streaks. It is known to be a very strong wood and has a high Janka rating, which makes it a very durable wood suitable for a variety of woodworking projects including outdoor construction of decking, houses, cabins, boats, docks, furniture and more. It is both strong and resistant to decay, rot and weather conditions. It can take moisture up to some extent. The interlocked grain of Cumaru may make it slightly difficult to work with and the presence of silica will occasionally cause a blunting effect on cutting machines.
Properties & Characteristics
Colour: The heartwood is medium to dark brown and may have an occasional reddish hue. Sometimes the wood has yellowish or greenish brown steaks over its body.
Density & hardness: The wood has interlocked grain with a medium texture. It is extremely hard and durable and has great weathering properties, that is the wood will fare well in all weathering conditions. In terms of decay and rot resistance, the wood is rated as very durable. It is also resistant to termites and wood borers.
Workability: The interlocked grain and high density of Cumaru wood can make it difficult to work with. Screwing, nailing and glueing can be difficult.
Despite being exceptionally strong and durable, it should be available at a moderate price for an imported wood.
