About Hickory Wood
It comes from the genus Carya of the walnut family and has about 18 species, including Water Hickory, Shellbark Hickory, Nutmeg Hickory, Shagbark Hickory, Pignut Hickory, and Pecan. Most hickory species are found in North America while the rest are native to eastern Asia. The trees are about 30 metres (100 feet) tall.
Hickory wood is extremely hard (1,820 lbf Janka rating) but only moderately heavy (735 kg/m3 (avg. dried weight). The heartwood is light to medium brown, often with a hint of red. The timber has a straight or wavy grain and medium texture. All species of Hickory are considered non-durable in terms of resistance to decay and insect attack. It can be difficult to work with due to its hardness and can blunt tool edges, but it glues, stains, and finishes rather well and has good steam bending results.
