Buloke, also known as Australian Buloke or bull oak is a hardwood in the Allocasuarina genus. The trees found commonly in Eastern Australia are about 30-50 ft (9-15 m) tall and have a 1-2 ft (.3-.6 m) trunk diameter. The wood is considerably heavy with an average dried weight of 1,085 kg/m3. With a Janka score of 3,760 lbf, it is one of the hardest woods in the world. The heartwood color is reddish brown. It can be easily identified by unique and prominent large full rays on its surface. The grain is straight but can also be interlocked. The texture is uniform medium. The wood is moderately durable but not ideal for in-ground use.
Buloke can be difficult to work with owing to its hardness. It turns and finishes well though. It is exclusively found in Australia and the price may be moderate to high depending on availability. It’s commonly used in furniture, fencing, flooring, knife handles, and turned objects.
